A Declaração da Independência
A Declaração da Independência dos EUA foi assinada no dia 4 de julho de 1776.
O Congresso criou um comitê, no dia 11 de junho de 1776, para escrever uma declaração oficial de independência. No comitê estavam John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston e Roger Sherman. O comitê pediu a Jefferson para escrever a Declaração e ele trabalhou nela para criar um rascunho entre os dias 12 e 27 de junho. Esse documento foi lido para o Congresso no dia 28 de junho, e debates e revisões seguiram-se nos próximos dias. A declaração foi adotada pelo Congresso no dia 4 de julho de 1776. Versões impressas foram enviadas às colônias no dia 5 de julho. Uma versão em jornal foi impressa pela primeira vez em um jornal da Pensilvânia no dia 6 de julho. Ela foi lida aos membros do Exército de George Washington no dia 8 de julho.
"No Congresso, sexta-feira, 7 de junho de 1776 - os delegados da Virgínia, movidos em obediência às instruções de seus constituintes, afirmam que o Congresso deve declarar que essas colônias unificadas são Estados independentes, livres, e que estão absolvidas da obediência à coroa britânica, e que toda a conexão política entre eles e o estado da Grã-Bretanha é, e deve ser, totalmente dissolvida; que medidas devem ser imediatamente tomadas para obter a assistência de forças estrangeiras, e uma Confederação deve ser formada para reunir as colônias."
Este documento deu origem aos Estados Unidos da América.
